The Rural Health Night is finally here! Do you have an interest in the ins and outs of healthcare in regional Australia? Are you considering a career in the country? Are you unsure of the opportunities available to those who want to work in remote or isolated areas? If so, then get yourself to the Rural Health Night 2012 to be inspired, informed and entertained by those who have experienced it firsthand! This event is for students of any healthcare profession; medicine, physiotherapy, pharmacy, dentistry,

nursing and any allied health profession you can think of.Presentations from our distinguished guests, focusing on the opportunities available to those interested in rural healthcare, will follow dinner and drinks in the New Law Building. The evening will conclude with a free discussion in which audience members will have the opportunity to ask whatever questions of the panel come to mind

The MC for the evening will be the irrepressible Simon Reid, Co-Chair of the National Rural Health Students Network (NRHSN) and SUMS 3rd Year Representative. The NRHSN provides a voice for over 9000 nursing, medical and allied health students who are passionate about improving health outcomes for rural, remote and Indigenous Australians. Simon is a huge supporter of solution-based advocacy, interprofessional education and breaking down stereotypes around rural health.

To whet your rural appetites, here’s a brief bio on our first confirmed speaker:

Libby Bowell FRCNA
- Libby is a member of CRANAplus – an organisation which promotes healthcare in rural and particularly remote areas of Australia. Originally nursing in Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital, Libby changed paths after meeting two remote area nurses. Since then she’s had extensive experience nursing in both remote Northern Territory areas and overseas for the Red Cross; including the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, the Kenyan floods of 2006/7, and most recently the Haiti earthquake. Currently on the call-up to work in Sierra Leone in the face of a recent cholera outbreak, Libby personifies the incredible opportunities available to those interested in rural healthcare, as well as the different paths one can take to get there.

To be inspired by speaker’s such as Libby, save Tuesday 16th in your diary, and get yourself to the New Law Lecture Theatre, University of Sydney. Watch this space for more information, and invite your interested friends!

Aside

Hi everyone,

The National Pharmacy Student Survey (NPSS) is designed for pharmacy students to have a say in important issues related to pharmacy and our profession. Your responses will be invaluable for NAPSA (National Australian Pharmacy Students’ Association) to make changes based on your opinions.

It will only take 4-5 minutes so it would be great if you can spare your time to complete it and you will be in the running for some great prizes.

Thanks!
